The internet is by far the cheapest and most effective way to market yourself in the modern world. Every business can gain benefit from the internet, be it an online company or not. Even people who work solely through a company such as eBay can utilise the internet more effectively – the union between an eBay shop and an independent online shop can be an extremely effective way of increasing business.
For a full discussion of online marketing methods please have a look at the marketing page.

Research

The internet is your best friend when it comes to research. The wealth of information currently available to the home business for free is simply staggering. There has been a push over the last half-decade to assimilate all the paper resources formerly available only in print (for example important journals dating back to the 1800’s) into vast online databases available to all. There are newspaper archives and online public data search tools, all available from your own home. To not use these tools is to put yourself at a severe disadvantage. It is simply asking someone to come and do better research than you so they can squash you; it is ridiculous. The obvious place to start is by searching on a search engine and following the links where they lead you. Just remember to search for other search tools as well.

Marketing/Information

There is little doubt that every business in the modern world, online or offline, requires a website. It is important that your customers can find you online and that once they have found you they can get all the information they want as easily as possible, and maybe even buy something while they are there. A good web site is a complicated thing – don’t be tempted to use a cheap/free template in MS FrontPage. Such a thing is simply not sufficient. If you have a lot of money to spare you should contact a professional design company, they will do a good job. However, if you don’t want to dump lots of money on such a company look for other home businesses like yourself. More to the point, look for freelance web designers and programmers. They will help a lot and you should be able to get up a professional site for a relatively small amount of money.

Once your site is up it is essential that you draw traffic to it. A site is no good if no-one comes to see what is there. Initially, you will probably want to just market the site through other methods as described in our marketing article. However, the most effective way of generating traffic is by optimising your site for search engines – a process known as SEO. There are many specialists out there who can help with this but you can do a lot yourself. Search online for techniques and submit your site regularly to the search engines. If your other marketing techniques are effective and you successfully build strong online relationships, your site will gradually score higher and higher.

although I think its worth remembering that the internet may only be a small part of your marketing strategy. you could have a real world or off-line marketing game and then give those clients accses to your url. so your website is a resource rather than an attractor in its own right.
